Woodpigeon: Love In The Time Of Hopscotch

Calgary-based Woodpigeon has created an amazing blend of vocal harmonies and soothing strings (and a zippy tamborine for good measure) that sets my toes tapping and leave me wanting to hear more. I found this oddly named gem on killbeat music and have been listening to it over and over (as I tend to do). I will look for more good stuff from Woodpigeon and see what I can find!

Julie Doiron: Consolation Prize

Canadian Julie Doiron creates personal/personable music about life, love, and the other things that go into good music. The sound is authentic and a bit gritty, but easy on the ears at the same time. Check out this sample track from her killbeat music release I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day: Consolation Prize.

Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees: You Don’t Miss Me

Wow! I can’t say enough about Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees. Hailing from Halifax, Nova Scotia (in Canada, of course) the four-person band is fronted by Rebekah Higgs, who performs as the epinymous Ruby Jean with breathy vocals that repeat then fade. Shades of Voice of the Beehive and B52s, but with a harder edge to the guitars and drums make this a great band to dance to, too.
