Scomber: Why? (GE Full Intention mix)

George Ellinas has done a totally amazing mix of Scomber’s Why? on the ccMixter site. Trippy beats, bouncing bass, ravy-gravy throughout. An excellent pick-me-up for those moments when things don’t seem to be going right and you just wonder why. No worries when this one plays!

Check out GE’s Facebook page to learn more about his work.

Dumb Dan: Padded Shoulders Marathon (edit)

Some ABC-flavored synthezier tinkling combined with a Dirty Vegas-esque voice warp combine to create a great dance tune from the oddly named Dumb Dan on the Bevlar netlabel.

Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees: You Don’t Miss Me

Wow! I can’t say enough about Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees. Hailing from Halifax, Nova Scotia (in Canada, of course) the four-person band is fronted by Rebekah Higgs, who performs as the epinymous Ruby Jean with breathy vocals that repeat then fade. Shades of Voice of the Beehive and B52s, but with a harder edge to the guitars and drums make this a great band to dance to, too.

Song available for free download on the RJATTB page on the killbeat music netlabel.

Keyboard (aka Fredy Alvarez): Antojos

Wow, this is heady stuff! Deep bass, bouncing beats, chirpy keyboards. Fredy Alvarez (aka Keyboard) has put together an amazing EP of dance-worthy goodness called (I kid you not) Beans with Bacon. No lyrics from this Columbian musician and producer, but maybe that is okay when the music is this good.

Clemens Eduard Haipl: Lieb Im Prinzip

Clemens Eduard Haipl is an Austrian artist (and sometimes member of Heirstyle and Cell1110) who released an album of his own called 330rawson on the now-defunct netlabel Comfort Stand.

Featured here for Valentine’s Day is the somwhat cynical song Lieb Im Prinzip. It is a fun retro dance piece that makes me jump around the room when I listen.

on the radar: change

Interesting, dark tune from on the rader on the German netlabel politicide.net. Murky and fascinating…perfect for a rain stormy night like tonight.

The Walt: Zur Biederburg

Angsty tune by from the Beep! Beep! netlabel here in the Netherlands. Plaintive vocals, lots of jangly guitars.

“In 2004, members from We vs. Death, Kismet, Stellenbosch and Dawn of Awakening, got together to form four-piece The Walt, based on a personal chemistry, geographical convenience and a shared passion for bands like At The Drive In, Medications, Q and not U, 31Knots, Me Without You and many others.”

DoKashiteru: I Fell Out of the Sky (featuring State Shirt)

Wow! With a bit of The Walkmen and a bit of Tim Booth (of James), this amazingly intense wall of sound is so much fun to listen to. I love the lyrics and the earnestness behind them from vocalist State Shirt on the ccMixer site. Well mixed, DoKashiteru.

Tor Bruce: Jasmin et des Jonquilles

Kim Ann hasn’t heard this one yet, but I’ll bet she will love Bruce Tor’s  Jasmin et des Jonquilles! It is dark and moody, has a great, bouncy bass line, and is in French to boot!

Tor Bruce (sometimes known by his alias Utz Utz Utz Utz) produces great stuff…including a his own version of Dedacia’s Muscle Man. Worth a listen!
